NGK: New spark plugs for the aftermarket

As of July 2006, three new spark plugs from NGK Spark Plug Europe are available for the aftermarket. Two of these are fitted as original equipment in cars from the Volkswagen Group and in the Smart. The third is a special application for Honda jet-skis.

The new PZFR5J-11 is a double platinum spark plug developed by NGK for the 1.2-litre-engines of the Seat Ibiza (47 kW) and the Skoda Fabia (40 kW). It is also used as original equipment in the 2.5-litre engine of Volkswagen’s New Beetle (110 kW), which is sold exclusively in the U.S.A.

Both the centre and the ground electrodes of the spark plug (VW part number 101 905 600) are coated with platinum by laser welding. This makes it possible for the centre electrode to be especially thin and ensures optimal combustion and fuel consumption. Another special feature of the spark plug: leakage current barriers are superfluous, as ignition coil and spark plug connector are designed as a unit in the application-specific engines.

The second new spark plug, the LKR8A, has two ground electrodes. Its thread has a diameter of only 12 mm and is 26.5 mm long. This spark plug also has no need for leakage current barriers. These characteristics result in the LKR8A providing optimal ignition in the 0.7-litre engines of the Smart Roadster (45 and 60 kW), the Smart (37 and 60 kW) and the Smart fortwo (37 and 45 kW). The particularly slim design of the spark plug harmonises with the engine compartment design, as the Twin Spark system used in the Smart models takes up additional space, which is already limited in Smart engines.

The third innovation for the aftermarket is the IMR9D-9H spark plug – a double precious metal spark plug for Honda jet-skis. This delicate spark plug (thread length 12.9 mm) has a platinum chip on the ground electrode which was produced especially for this application. Its centre electrode is made from iridium. The spark plug is used in the ARX 1200 N2/T2 and ARX 1200 N3/T3 models. Both engines have a capacity of 1,200 cc.
